COLOUR MY WORLD
A few hints when buying vintage fashion...
The best way to wear vintage clothing is to give it a modern spin. Often the mistake people make when attempting vintage trends is to overdo a look. Unless you are super confident or are completely dedicated to a particular era, wearing vintage pieces from head to toe will be over kill and most likely end up making you look like your Gran!
The trick is to mix it up. So, if you are wearing a vintage dress from the 1950's, team it with something contemporary like brightly coloured heels from your favourite designer and some really great, modern jewellery. A fabulous vintage cocktail frock can look incredibly glamorous teamed with pair of sky high stilettos and perhaps a metallic or studded belt.
Alternatively, if you are wearing a dress from a contemporary designer vintage accessories can really give your look an edge. Vintage hats, vintage scarfs, vintage handbags or clutches and vintage jewellery are a perfect way to add glamour to any outfit.
If you are going for an all out retro or vintage look be sure to wear your hair in a really modern style. This will update your look instantly and add some serious street cred. A dated hairstyle will make your whole outfit scream ‘I never really got past 1985!!’
Don't always be put off by little flaws on vintage clothing, sometimes they can actually add a sense of history to a vintage garment and enhance its uniqueness. However, certain blemishes and flaws can't always be salvaged so be careful when buying vintage clothing. In particular, always check for stains, particularly to the underarm area as these have been caused by either body odour or chemicals from deodorants and perfumes and are unlikely to ever come out. Also, keep an eye out for moth eaten garments and tears to lining. If lining is damaged beyond repair this can often mean the garments structure has been destroyed and it will be too weak to be wearable ever again.
Finally, there may be times when your vintage will require alterations. Don't be afraid to buy it anyway. A lot of vintage clothing from by gone days was hand-made and therefore made to fit specific measurements. Also, our figures have definitely changed over the years so if something requires a little tweak here or there, get it done - you'll feel better wearing it if it fits properly! |
